The potential for residues from Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) to harbor sublethal concentrations of microorganisms, thereby increasing the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), has been a subject of scientific investigation. Several studies have explored this concern:
  • Tolerance and Resistance Mechanisms: A review published in Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control discusses how bacteria can develop tolerance or resistance to Quaternary Ammonia Compounds (QACs) through mechanisms such as changes in cell membrane structure, efflux pumps, biofilm formation, and QAC degradation. The study highlights that while laboratory evidence shows bacteria can develop tolerance to QACs, there is insufficient evidence in real-world settings to conclude that frequent use of QAC disinfectants has promoted widespread emergence of antibiotic resistance. Aric Journal

  • Impact on Antibiotic Resistance Genes: Research in Environmental Science and Pollution Research examined the effect of QACs on the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The study found that QACs could increase bacterial resistance to multiple antibiotics and promote the conjugation transfer of plasmids carrying ARGs. This suggests that QACs may facilitate the evolution and gene transfer of antibiotic resistance among microbiomes. Springer Link

  • Environmental and Health Concerns: A critical review in Environmental Science & Technology warns about the overuse of QACs, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors note that increased levels of these chemicals in the environment and human bodies are linked to health problems, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental harm. They recommend eliminating unnecessary uses of QACs and suggest that disinfection with QACs often has no benefit over cleaning with plain soap and water. Northwestern News

These studies underscore the importance of cautious and appropriate use of QAC-based disinfectants to mitigate the risk of promoting antimicrobial resistance.

  2. E-60 Safety and Efficacy
A WPI study showed that neutral-pH E-60 disinfects in under two minutes—outperforming alcohols and matching bleach. At 100 ppm or below, cells and organisms stayed healthy; at higher levels, most organisms recovered, unlike with bleach. These findings highlight E-60 as a fast, eco-friendly disinfectant that leaves no harmful residue and offers a safer alternative for healthcare, labs, and communities.

"In the ICU, where every second and every detail matters, finding tools that streamline our work without compromising patient safety is crucial. That's precisely what happened when we introduced Eradocate into our routine. It quickly transitioned from a new product to try, to an indispensable part of our daily practice, something we now can't imagine being without. Eradocate's rapid action and seamless integration into our hectic schedules have been nothing short of revolutionary. "Being on the environmental services team in a hospital, you really get to know the nooks and crannies of what keeps a place like this running smoothly. I'll admit, when we first got our hands on Eradocate, I wasn't expecting a whole lot to change. But, boy, was I wrong. This stuff has completely flipped our cleaning game on its head, in the best way possible. Gone are the days of wrestling with those harsh chemicals that leave you feeling dizzy and doing double the work to get rid of sticky residues. Eradocate zaps through grime in no time and doesn't leave anything behind but cleanliness. It's been a back-saver, literally. No more going over the same spot a dozen times, which my back is thanking me for every single day. And it's not just about making my job easier—though it definitely does. It's about knowing we're using something that's safe for everyone in the hospital, from the little ones to the elderly, and even for us, the folks behind the scenes. It's pretty cool to see everyone from nurses to my fellow cleaning pros actually excited about a cleaning product. It just goes to show how much of a difference Eradocate has made for us. Switching to Eradocate has sped up our cleaning routines and upped our safety game, making it a must-have in our cleaning arsenal. For anyone who spends their days keeping places spotless and safe, especially in a bustling hospital, Eradocate feels like it was made just for us."

Testimonial #4 Environmental Service Technician

My name is Jon Merrill, and I serve as Director of Support Services at Havenwood-Heritage Heights, a five-star Continuing Care Retirement Community in Concord, NH, overseeing housekeeping, laundry, and Dining Services. When I assumed responsibility for housekeeping, I saw that staff were struggling with multiple cleaning products and protocols for different pathogens, which created unnecessary complexity and barriers to effective work. After our infection specialist, Rachel Elliott, attended the NHICEP annual conference and was impressed by Dr. Johns’ presentation, she introduced us to Eradocate as a way to streamline and strengthen our approach. In Spring 2024, following Dr. Johns’ presentation to our leadership, we unanimously decided to remove all other cleaning chemicals and adopt Eradocate as our sole disinfectant platform—using E-60 for resident rooms, common bathrooms, shower rooms, and floors, and E-120 for terminal cleans, including both in our electrostatic sprayers. The transition has significantly improved efficiency and effectiveness for our housekeeping team, thanks to rapid disinfection and simplified protocols, while the non-toxic nature of the products has enhanced safety for residents and staff. Dr. Johns has been highly supportive throughout implementation, demonstrating a clear passion for effective, practical infection control. Since adopting Eradocate, we have seen a measurable improvement in outbreak management, with the average length of outbreaks decreasing from 23 days in 2024 to 16 days in 2025, and we are very pleased with how Eradocate helps us maintain high standards of cleanliness and disinfection for our residents, visitors, and staff.
