Current outbreak: FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate Salmonella Javiana outbreak linked to jalapeƱo peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico. FDA's August 21 update lists 431 illnesses across 32 states, 57 hospitalizations, and no deaths. FDA is also tracking active Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:-, Salmonella Oranienburg, and Salmonella Enteritidis investigations.
Salmonella Newport
Current outbreak: FDA has opened a new Salmonella Newport investigation, reference 1403. The food source has not yet been identified and traceback is underway.
Alfalfa sprouts: STEC + Salmonella
Current outbreak: FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate outbreak linked to recalled Calco and Everything Sprouts-brand alfalfa sprouts. The outbreak includes Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O26:H11, O103:H25, and O168:H8 plus Salmonella Agona. FDA's August 24 update reports 55 illnesses across 15 states, 4 hospitalizations, and no deaths. A product recall was initiated August 22. FDA also advises restaurants, retailers, and food-service operations to clean and sanitize surfaces and containers contacted by the recalled sprouts.
Listeria monocytogenes
Recent outbreak: FDA and CDC closed the multistate Clover Hill Dairy soft-cheese outbreak on August 26. The final investigation reported 15 illnesses across 4 states, 14 hospitalizations, and 1 death. Product and environmental samples from the dairy matched the outbreak strain, reinforcing the importance of environmental hygiene in food operations.
Candida auris
Current watch: C. auris continues to challenge healthcare and long-term-care environments because it can persist on surfaces and spread within facilities. CDC continues national clinical and screening surveillance.
Cyclospora
Current outbreak: FDA's August 20 update on the iceberg-lettuce Cyclospora outbreak lists 10,930 illnesses across 17 states, 454 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths. The investigation remains ongoing and is highly relevant to produce handling, food service, and cross-contamination control. FDA's CORE table also shows continued case growth in two additional Cyclospora investigations.
H5N1 Avian Influenza
